From the Desk of Bacatya

Hard to believe that May is already here.  Let’s not forget Mothers Day on May 11th.  Honoring all Mothers on this day.  For those who never know what to get as a gift to our mother, I recently told my grandchildren, that when in doubt on any occasion the perfect gift to any older person is a voucher for a good ole house cleaning.  I explained that as parents and grandparents get older the task of cleaning our houses becomes a real headache.  We don’t seem to move as quickly as we did when we were younger and bending just to do simple things as dust becomes harder and harder.  Also, we appreciate the voucher much more than some what-knot sitting around collecting even more dust.  Most of us already have more than 2 families would ever need in dust collectors.  Not that we don’t appreciate it but hey, I would rather be honest with them then for them to see their item in my next yard sale.  If cleaning isn’t what you want to give then ASK!  No point in getting them something that they are just going to act like they are overwhelmed with.  You may think this is a tad bit pushy but I tend to be more on the open and honest side these days.  Shoot, buy me some ink for my printer or a gift card for some gas.  Just not another dust collector please!  Now I have to buy my mother something!  And people think I’m hard to buy for????????   Have a Happy Mothers Day!

2.    A couple of cool things to note about our new page:

Registering for a tourney has become super easy! Login in the upper right corner, find the tourney you want to enter on the list and click register. Voila! You’re registered with a single click! Cool, huh? Or ------ you can type in the tourney jump # to register.

After you’ve logged in and registered, click the “Play Now” link in the upper right corner to take you to Medium Strip.

3.   If you would like to be invited to voice so you can talk to your fellow canastanuts while playing, please download Skype and ask Bac to add you. Please be aware that while conversation in the lobby is censored and must be family friendly, conversation on Skype is not.

4.   Congratulations to Mary (majormomof3). Her granddaughter, Zoey Lynn, was born April 23rd. She was 5 lbs 12 oz and 19 ½ inches.

Shrimp and Avocado Salad

Submitted by admn_terri

1 pound boiled shrimp, diced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon plus a pinch cayenne pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1/2 cup mayonnaise, preferably homemade
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions
1 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
Pinch red pepper flakes
2 cups chopped kale
Splash water
1 ripe avocado, peeled, seed removed and quartered

Combine the shrimp, 1/4 teaspoon of the salt, a pinch of the cayenne pepper, and celery in a bowl and toss to combine. In the bowl of a food processor combine the mayonnaise, remaining salt and cayenne, green onions, parsley, and lemon juice and blend until smooth. Add half of the mayonnaise mixture to the shrimp mixture and toss to combine. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Place remaining mayonnaise mixture in a small bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve.

In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil. Add the red pepper flakes and cook for 1 minute. Add the kale and the water and cook until the kale is slightly wilted, about 2 to 3 minutes.

Place some kale on a plate. Using a sharp paring knife, cut each avocado quarter into thin strips lengthwise and arrange each quarter in a fanned-out fashion on a salad plate. Spoon 1/4 of the shrimp salad onto the center of each plate and drizzle with some of the remaining dressing. (If the dressing is too thick to drizzle, thin with a few drops of water or milk to desired consistency.)

Combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Yield: 2/3 cup

People who file a return after April 15 will receive their economic stimulus payment, but probably about two weeks later than the schedule shows. A return must be filed by October 15 in order to receive a stimulus payment this year. See the online calculator for an estimate of the amount you will receive.

A small percentage of tax returns will require additional time to process and to compute a stimulus payment amount. For these returns, stimulus payments may not be issued in accordance with the schedule above, even if the tax return was processed by April 15.

HOW TO GIVE A CAT A PILL

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right fore-finger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse in from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down the straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw Tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour two pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and remove pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15. Arrange for SPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.
