It has come to my attention that many of you don’t read the newsletter, much less my brilliant ramblings. I was so crushed that I begged Linda to let me sit on you and read it to you by force but she vetoed that. There MUST be some way to “encourage” you.  Hmmmmm…..   see ya later gotta do some plotting….. (and no Linda, that was NOT an evil laugh….I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about.)

From the Desk of Bacatya

Dear Canastanuts,

This month feature from your administrator will be to discuss a member whom we all know as Scott_Grant84.  When Scott first became a canastanut, I remember refreshing him on a game in which he had not played since he was a very young boy.  We played a few games of reg-cut then I introduced him to no touch cut.  This has been Scotty’s game ever since.  It used to take him on the average of an hour to an hour and a half to play one game.  Lord where did I ever find the patience for that I’ll never know.  After being with the canastanuts for about a month or so Scott learned he had prostate cancer.  Each day thereafter was a battle for him.  Through the many months of treatment Scott remained playing with us and making each of us laugh as his health took a toll on him.  Through the sickness he never let on to any of his friends that he could hardly bare the side effect of this horrid illness.  I remember him saying during one of his nosebleeds, “Well there’s that penny I lost when I was 5 years old.”  Always finding a way to not make US feel so darn uncomfortable and not knowing what to say to him.  As we all know it is not the easiest thing in the world to come up with words to comfort those who are ill.  With Scott his comfort was knowing that he had a league of people who he knew would support him in prayer and with that he was confident that he would be just fine.  The first blowout that Scotty attended he was still very ill.  We all did our best to comfort him and make him feel loved.  Little did we know at the time that he thought all of us to be ax murderers!  Sheila managed to keep him full of fluids while at the blowout.  As she made sure if that bottle of water fell below the half way mark that he needed a fresh bottle and I think he knew better than to disagree with her.  We also had another cancer patient attend that blowout.  She too was from N.C. her name was Shiney Penny.  This blowout was one I think I cherish the most of all our gatherings in the past and up to this very day.  One thing for sure it was one of our most touching.  Many a tear was shed that year.  They were tears of joy not sadness.  We had several pages presented to several members, which was a teary event.  Then ole Pam decided she wanted to bawl like a baby when she was presented with the P.I.A. award.  We all were blessed when Tony Sager took the whole group out to seafood dinner at the Old Schoolhouse.  Scott was determined to eat!  No matter what he wanted that seafood.  Well bless his heart, he ate the seafood and then ate it again.  Best seafood he ever ate.

After Scott had met his fellow canastanuts at blowout he said to me.  “Bac, how do I tell all those wonderful folks I am not who I said I was?  I am in an awful fix.”  Well, I said first we gotta get you moved from Kansas.  Then we will deal with the rest. I knew he was not who he claimed he was, just a gut instinct.  So, one day while on cam I said to him “Scott I am going to ask you to do something for me.  Would you promise no matter what you will do it.”?  He agreed.  So, I ask him to pull his billfold out from his back pocket and open it.  Then to put his drivers license up to the cam where I could read it.  He did.  Then said I knew I couldn’t fool you for long you too darn smart.  Now I’m really in a fix.  I told him not to worry his secret was safe with me.  I let it slide for about a week to let him heal from the humiliation.  Then I announced in the lobby one night that he was not who he posed to be!  Ohhhhhhhh poor Scotty!  I lightened the blow with the announcement that he thought we were all ax murderers!  I believe we all wet our pants that night.  Now with the truth out, there was no canastanut that saw him as Michael Melvin!  He was our Scotty and we would not call him anything else.

In the years that have followed, he as remained the same true gentleman as when he first joined this league.  Always whooping our tails in NTC.  The king of ntc is truly Scott_Grant84.  Only difference is, instead of taking an hour to do it he now does it in a record time of 12 mins.  If you get the chance to beat him, you know he is having a bad day.  Even on his bad days he still pops in the lobby making each of us smile.

Almost 2 weeks ago we learned he was hospitalized.  We have all been very saddened by this and have supported him through prayers daily.  We know Scott will recover, as we believe God has and continues to touch his body.  I want to thank all those who helped with funds so we could send him a Peace Lily.  I bought the biggest one available for the guy with the biggest heart I know.  I also would like to thank his son Chris, and his daughter Beth for keeping us informed on his condition.  In closing I would like to say this.  Thank you Scott_Grant for allowing us to be a part of your life.  Also for all the joy and laughter you have always given each of us.  Most of all I would like to thank his wife Alice for lending us her husband.  Scott is and always will be the best thing that ever happened to this league!  We love you very much Scott!

Tax News by Mandy

1.  CHOOSE THE SIMPLEST FEDERAL TAX FORM FOR YOUR NEEDS

The three forms used for filing individual federal income tax returns are Form 1040EZ, Form 1040A and Form 1040. If you are filing a federal income tax return on paper, use the simplest form you can. Using the simplest allowable form will reduce the chance of an error that may cost you money or delay the processing of your return.

1040EZ You may qualify to use Form 1040EZ, the simplest form, if:

Your taxable income is below $100,000

Your filing status is Single or Married Filing Jointly

You (and spouse) are under age 65 and not blind

You are not claiming any dependents

Your interest income is $1,500 or less

1040A You may be able to use Form 1040A if:

1040 If you cannot use either a 1040EZ or 1040A, you probably need to use Form 1040. You must file form 1040 if:

Choosing the correct tax form could mean money in your pocket. Check your tax instructions carefully. Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, is a helpful guide to preparing your federal tax forms. It is available on the IRS Web site at IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Remember that for the genuine IRS Web site be sure to use .gov.  Don't be confused by internet sites that end in .com, .net, .org or other designations instead of .gov.

The address of the official IRS governmental Web site is www.irs.gov.

Carol’s Crafts

(February) Candy Rose Valentine
Three sweet ways to transform lollipops into a bouquet of Valentine treats! Easy enough to make a bunch for a classroom Valentine’s day party!

Candy Lollipop Valentine Flowers: No cooking, no gluing, easy for younger children to make!
Supplies: wrapped heart shaped lollipops, green chenille stems, scissors
Directions: Starting at the top of the top, tightly wrap the chenille stem in a coil around the lollipop stick. Cut off reaming pieces of chenille, about 3”. Twist the small piece of the chenille around the stem where you want the flower leaves to be. Then shape the leaves and twist to secure. If you want to add a name tap or note, cut a piece of paper and make a hole with a hole punch. Secure the note onto the smaller piece of chenille before twisting into the leaf shape.

Chocolate Heart Valentine Roses: These candy roses take a few more steps and more effort, but will make a fun Saturday afternoon project for you and the kids.
Supplies: a candy heart lollipop mold (craft store), lollipop sticks (craft store), melting chocolate or almond bark (craft or grocery store), construction paper, clear plastic wrap, wire "twisties", glue stick, scissors
Directions: Melt the chocolate according to package instructions. Carefully pour the melted chocolate into the mold and insert the stick. Chill or leave until hard. Gently remove the lollipops and wrap with a small pieces of plastic wrap. Secure with the wire "twistie". Fold the green paper in half and cut the leaf shapes on the folded edge, so that they open up. Fold the leaves around the lollipop sticks and glue both sides of the leaf together. Add a note if desired. If you want to use two colors for your hearts. Pour one layer first.
After the first layer is hard, pour the second color. The swirled heart that you see above, was created by drizzling the red first, let it harden and then add the white. It was very easy and created a unique effect.  Use tissue paper and ribbon to make a sweet bouquet for a teacher or grandmother!
TIP: The colored candy melts that you can purchase at the craft store are more expensive than white almond bark (grocery store). We purchased one bag of red candy melts and used almond bark for our white. You can also mix the two together to make pink.

Valentine Kiss Rose: A unique valentine for kids to give to friends and family!
Supplies: wrapped chocolates - kiss shape, lollipop sticks (craft store), constructions paper, hot glue gun
Directions: Use the hot glue gun (adults) to attach the kiss-rose to the lollipop stick. Fold the green paper and cut leaves along the folded edge, so that they open. Wrap the leaves around the lollipop stick and glue both sided of the leaf together. Add a message toe the leaf with a pen. Tip: We found our kiss shaped candies in the bulk section of the grocery store.

Putting  Your Affairs In Order...

A  woman went to her doctor.

The  doctor, after an examination, sighed and
said, "I've some bad news.
You have cancer, and you'd best put your affairs in order."

The  woman was shocked, but managed to
compose herself and walk into the waiting
room where her daughter had been waiting.

"Well daughter, we women  celebrate when
things are good, and we celebrate when things
don't go so well.

In this case, things aren't well. I have cancer.
Let's head to the club and have a martini."

After 3 or 4 martinis, the two were feeling a
little less somber.
There were some laughs and more  martinis.
They were eventually approached by some of
the woman's old friends, who were curious as
to what the two were celebrating.

The  woman told her friends they were drinking
to her impending end.

"I've been diagnosed with AIDS."

The  friends were aghast and gave the woman
their condolences.

After the friends left, the woman's daughter
leaned over and whispered,

"Momma, I thought you said you were dying
of cancer, and you just  told your friends you
were dying of AIDS."

The woman said, "I don't want any  of those
b
*tches  sleeping with your father after I'm gone."

That's "Putting Your  Affairs In Order.

Pet of the Month

These 2 adorable cats belong to Bacatya.  On the left is Sassy and her daughter on the right is Saidi.  Saidi loves the top of the cat tower and is her escape from Sheila the dog.  Sassy on the other hand uses the bell cabinet or any high place is just fine with her.  Sassy is a Lavender Himalayan and Saidi is a rare Tortie Himalayan.  Bac claims if you are going out, you are not fully accessorized unless you are covered in cat hair.  Needless to say she keeps the lint roller company in business.
